Best parrot for children????

by San on November 23, 2008

In this household there is not only a flock of parrots, Amazon, two macaws, Senegal, a cockatiel, two eclectus, one  blue crowned conure and even a small flock of budgies i only adopted yesterday  (someone was redecorating and found the white budgies did not fit her new decor!).  And oh yes, last but not forgotten, besides a very alpha kaley corgi, there is the jake kid – he is now  15 months old!

nice to look at, but do not touch! —so  mum says to both rani macaw and jake kid!

So what is the best bird for a family with young children?

does this kid talk, or do i have to say everything, just cuz i am an African Grey?

What do i think is just about the absolute best bird for a family that wants a bird they can hold?

My top choice is the cockatiel, male or female, but males have the ability to talk.  Just in case one of the kids wants one of ‘those birds that can talk’, yes, a male cockatiel can entertain quite nicely.

just because i talk like them, you seem to not understand me Spike!

I am not saying the best bird for a family with children is a cockatiel, but that happens to be my choice due to their size and entertainablilty.  However, birds are a bit more fragile than your common cat or dog, so care has to be taken that young children are supervised and taught how to hold  a bird or how to respect its surroundings …no  bird wants to – be poked or caged banged!

However, if one wants a bird only for looks, introducing kids to finches, a canary or a couple of budgies can too fit the bill.

In the wide world of parrots, there  surely is a bird just right for a family who wants one or two lil cute  feathered friends.
