It’s a brocolli, banana, bread day.

What is a day if there is no broccoli, bananas or bread? What is a day if there are no fun foods that happen to be also be good foods? Parrots love to eat and a variety of foods in a parrot’s diet make for a happy and healthy parrot. A good diet and nutrition will prevent health and behavioral problems.

Here you see Jordan the grey enoying her fun foods, tasty foods, good for her foods and very tactile and stimulating foods. I doubt in the wild she would find so readily a piece of bread or steamed brocolli or a nice piece of banana, but being not a bird in the wild, she does get a variety of foods daily according to what there is available.

Most members of the parrrot family are florivores, meaning main portion of their diet is from plants. Among florivores, are grainivores, meaning from grains and seeds and frugivors, which is based on fruits.

There is a wide variety of fruits and veggies that are good choices and will provide parrots with the source of vitamins and minerals and carbohydrates needed. Vegetables should consist of 15-30% of the diet. Fruits should consist about 5%. Try radishes, carrots, kale, tomato, eggplant, red beets, corn, cucumbers, squash, endive, broccoli, cauliflower, turnips or romaine lettuce. For fruits, try, pineapple, apples, grapefruit, grapes, banana, tangerines, oranges, cranberries, pears, kiwi, or how about pomegranate. Pomegranates are messy, but parrots love them. As you can see, there is no reason to include fruits and veggies in your parrot’s diet.

Seeds, the common foods most think birds only eat , is not going to provide any parrot or companion bird a balanced diet. The seeds found in the wild are more nutrious than the seeds we buy in the store which are lower in protein and vitamins.. When feeding seeds to our companion birds, they will often pick their favorites which only means they will not be getting their full nutrional needs met.

Pelleted diets such as Zupreem, Harrisons, Roudybush, are a blend of grains, seeds, veggies, fruits along with added vitamins and minerals and baked. My parrots have their daily pellets in their bowl at all times and even some of the parrots show favoritism on which colors they pick out first, but I do not toss out the colors left behind, for in the end, they do eat them as well.

Even among the different species of parrots, nutrional needs are different. Cockatoos and Amazons need a higher level protein and lower fat, whereas macaws and Golden conures need a higher fat level. What ever kind of parrot you have, make sure you find out what specifically are their special needs so you can ensure they will live a long time.

Overall, diet and nutrition play a very imortant factor in maintiang good health in any parrot’s diet, and it is nice much of the foods they need to eat, come right out of our gardens or favorite food stores.
