So I am writing to ask you for some advice. We have a 5 year old Solomon Island Eclectus parrot (male). He is the love of our life. But, I also want get a dog. We have been doing a lot of research into different breeds and the one we seem to have settled on is a corgi. How do you think a corgi will get along with our parrot? And do you have any specific tips on raising a corgi with a parrot.

gee, even the kid is nice….everyone is nice here!

me and kaley corgi ….watch tv…or more like she watches, i try to get her to play with me…silly corgi couch potato girl!
Dear Andrej,
A very good question! It’s also very smart to ask before you do an impulse adopt/purchase of a pup when you already have another pet. Since your bird is your sweetheart, and is a out of cage bird, it is smart to know what you are getting yourself into, adopting a dog…….a corgi of all choices.
Not sure why you want a corgi….. they are rather silly looking and…..hmmmm, a corgi? hehehe, you have to ask my humans ’bout that one….humans think differently than us birds!
Well, first of all, there’s major difference between getting a preowned corgi or puppy. Puppies you can train from the beginning and older dogs, you deal with possibly some behavior issues, or find one that is super docile and sweet or scared of birds…….and so on and so on.
However, no matter what, you will want both pup and bird to live in harmony….the only way!
Supervise first meetings….especially with a puppy, they are wild on their own…and you surely do not want your five year old bird to start having fears.
Keep in mind, your eclectus was the baby and the only pet in the family…. no other pet, no other human…and jealousy can happen. Your eclectus should not feel he is being replaced…….birds end up with issues with that and can start to scream, pluck…..and becoming the no so nice bird because of change.
Until you are comfortable with the two together, supervise. If your corgi goes after your eclectus roughly, tell him, “No, leave the bird alone,” and when he does, tell him what a good puppy he is. You have to do it right when he refocus on you so he knows what he did good. It might take a few times, but corgis are smart! You can use a small treat too, since corgis are food oriented. If you see that your corgi was going after the bird as if to coax to play, as when they act like so with other dogs and you are not comfortable with your pup and bird physically playing together, focus your dog on a toy he loves. Mum uses the command, “Kaley, where is your ball, where is your ball.” Kaley loves her ball and will play ball anytime of day and knows to look for it.

playtime with……..??? both of the kids! They play fair, but of course, kaley wants her frisbee cuz mum tosses it….rani macaw likes to just take everything!
Both your parrot and corgi are the kids, but make sure both get individual time alone for full focus play with you. Not fair if they have to think they are not in competition with each other for mum and dad time!
In time, as you see fit, they can be out together.
Just remember you set the limits and rules…be fair, be firm….mum here treats all the parrots and corgi as smart creatures, for they are, so they know what is right and wrong!

i taught kaley corgi a few things….if not for me, she would not know the loquat fruit is tastey treat!

hehe, nooo, did not teach her bananas are good…..she is hoping i drop it! Mum is watching she does not steal it! ….corgi kids are known to have a one track mind….food….Food…FOOD!

i do like kaley corgi…she is a good kid…for being a corgi kid!
mum says, you will have fun with both corgi and eclectus together…mum has fun with her mini parrot flock and me and we all are fine being out together at the same time. Have fun.
